LIVE Video Chat Information

-Before you begin-

Please see the LIVE CHAT requirements to see if your devices are compatible with Live Video Chat.

Please confirm you're able to run the Live Chat by running this Pre Video Chat Test.

-LIVE Video Chat Introduction-

Level Up Village is very excited to be breaking new ground and including the additional option of a LIVE Video Chat feature during our courses.

Each LUV LIVE video chat allows for a pair of students, or group of students, to connect in real time for up to 10 minutes. Our goal is for every student in the class to experience this.

-Arranging your LUV LIVE Video Chat-

We have introduced a teacher-to-teacher chat feature in the Teacher Portal to allow for teachers to ‘message’ or ‘chat’ with one another to help you set your Video Chat time up between your students. You should use this to discuss your student availability with your partner teacher to organize the live chat between the classrooms.

You can consider whether or not allowing your students to participate in their live video chat from home/outside their LUV classroom is an option. The teacher is always able to ‘participate’ in the video chat with the two students and can manually override their student’s ability to disconnect, at any time. The content of the live chat will always be recorded and saved to the Video Chat exchange tab after disconnecting.

In order to set-up your LIVE chat, you will need to consider the following:

  • You and your partner classroom’s timezone information
  • What time of day you are most likely able to connect
  • What days and weeks during your course your students would be available at this time
  • How many students can be connected simultaneously

Your platform class page provides information about your partner school - including the time zone. Please use this to understand the time difference.

For example:

Your school timezone: e.g. Zimbabwe = UTC +02.00

Your partner’s school timezone: e.g. USA (CT) = UTC -05.00

Here, the partnership has a 7hr difference between classrooms where the American classroom is behind the African classroom. The Zimbabwean students would need to be able to participate in a Video Chat with their American partners after 3.30pm, if the American students were available from 8.30am. Most of the time, students will need to be flexible to stay on later at school, or arrive early, in order to connect.

Once you know the time of day your students would need to be available, you should then work out which days, preferably in the second half of your course that you could potentially have cohorts of your students available to connect. You should allow at least 20 mins for each Live 10-minute chat session, initially, to allow for connectivity issues.

You should determine how many devices and students you wish to have connected to the internet, connecting via the LUV Student Portal, Live Video Chat at one time. If devices are not limited, we would recommend planning for 4-5 students to connect at one time. If you have a class of 20 students with similar connecting abilities, you would therefore need to arrange for 5 time slots for connecting with your partner. The partner with the ability to connect the fewer students is the maximum number of students that can be connected at one time.

We have designed this Live Video Chat Scheduler template, which can be used to organize the order of live video chats running in your classroom and partner classroom. This template is linked to your Teacher Portal Resources tab. Please follow this video OR these steps to ensure you and your partner teacher are aware of when each student should click "connect" with their partner student to begin the live video chat:

  1. Log into your Teacher Portal
  2. Go to the Teacher Resources section in your Teacher Portal (click here for help locating this)
  3. Download the file, add your students' names and the partner names next to them in the correct ordered pair, and save the file to your desktop.
  4. Click "View and Edit Class Details" from your dashboard view in the Teacher Portal
  5. Click "Edit Class Data" on the top right of this page
  6. Click "Add a File" on the right, under "Class Resources".
  7. Select the File, title it "[Your Country], LIVE Video Chat Schedule", and click "Save".
  8. Be sure to message your partner teacher after doing this, so he/she can find the updated file afterwards!

Please understand that we will do our best to ensure as many of your students as possible are able to experience this exciting addition to their class, but we cannot guarantee it will be accessible to all students. Remember to encourage your students to be patient when trying to connect and discuss all the variables with them to manage their expectations.

Once the details have been arranged, your students need to be ready and waiting for the LUV LIVE Video Chat to take place. Please ensure your students have logged into their Student Portals, and have opened the Video Chat tab - found after Exchange 3

Please have your students locate and view the Discussion Questions, which should guide the conversation during the live chat. Both your students and your partner students should follow these prompts to move the conversation along, over the 10-minutes live video chat period.

-----After your LUV LIVE Video Chat-----

The video will be saved under the “Video Chat” tab in the Student Portal. Teachers can also view the video under the “VC” (Video Chat) tab in the Teacher Portal. Click on the students’ name to view the individual live video chat.

Teachers have the option to delete any live video chats that were saved in this tab by clicking “Remove Video Chat Archive”.

Please note: Anytime a student clicks “Connect” for the live chat, this will override any video that was previously saved in this tab.

If you have any issues or questions, please email, use the Live chat with the Support Team function in your Teacher Portal, or call (203) 397-6189.
